Liverpool its People and Places
The Liverpool of today is a changed city. It's emerging as one of the UK's leading centres for learning, culture, entertainment, sport and endeavour. The award of European Capital of Culture 2008 has confirmed this - and the people are right at the heart of it all.
There are more museums, theatres and galleries on Merseyside than in any other region outside London. World-class exhibitions at Tate Liverpool, National Museums Liverpool, the Walker and the Bluecoat are complemented by original plays and major productions hosted at the Everyman and the Playhouse. The Unity Theatre is unique for contemporary drama and the Liverpool Empire hosts many musicals after their West End runs.
Since being granted city status in 1207 by King John, there’s been no stopping Liverpool. 800 years on this former fishing village has transformed itself into the cheeky, thriving metropolis we know and love today.
But Liverpool is not one to rest on its laurels. Spurred on by its coronation as European Capital of Culture 2008, the city is undergoing another major transformation – and fast. New shopping complexes, trendy bars and restaurants, opening of a new cruise liner facility, a multi-million pound art centre and chic hotels are all upping Liverpool’s dazzling pace, making it one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the country.
